What alloys can be poured in investment casting process?
Investment casting process is suitable for almost all the ferrous and nonferrous materials. As a top investment casting foundry,Fly foundry could make both ferrous and non ferrous investment castings for our customers. Now we would like to introduce what alloys can be poured in investment casting process:
Ferrous alloys
Ferrous alloys are iron based alloys that have wide use in industries for its good strength, toughness and impact. For ferrous alloys, carbon steel, tool steel, alloy steel and stainless steel are commonly poured. We call them ferrous investment castings.
Types of Ferrous Alloys
Various types of ferrous metals and alloys are available in the market:
*Carbon steels are ferrous alloys that contain carbon and small levels of other alloying elements, such as manganese or aluminum.
*Alloy steels contain low to high levels of elements such as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and nickel.
*Stainless steels are highly corrosion resistant, ferrous alloys that contain chromium and/or nickel additions.
*Cast iron, a ferrous alloy, contains high amounts of carbon. Ductile iron, gray iron and white cast iron grades are types of cast iron.
*Cast steel alloy grades are made by pouring molten iron into a mold.
*Cast Iron Alloy and Iron Alloy are two major ferrous alloys used in most industrial applications.
Nonferrous alloys
Nonferrous alloys are referred to those alloys, which are derived from the non-ferrous metals. It is widely used to manufacturer nonferrous investment castings.North American United Numbering system (UNS) is the accepted alloy designation for all the non-ferrous alloys across North America.
Non Ferrous alloys works on a wide variety of mechanical properties and material characteristics.
Key Features of Nonferrous Alloy:
*Specified for use in electrical and electronic applications.
*Reduced weight
*Higher strength
*Nonmagnetic properties
*Higher melting points
*Resistance to chemical and atmospheric corrosion.
As with any casting process, investment casting materials can be specifically made for a customer depending on the materials at the metalcasting plant. But unlike sand casting process, the ceramic molds in investment casting can be brought to more than 1,500F (816C), thus increasing their strength. This allows for high-temperature pours. Ductile iron and steel pour in the 2,600-2,900F (1,427-1,593C) range and monels pour at more than 3,100F (1,704C). These temperatures ensure the most efficient pouring procedures and allow for smoother cooling methods when cast in the ceramic shell.
